Relationship Among the Cognitive Status, Activities Daily Living and the COPM(Canadian Occupational Performance Measure) in Cerebral Vascular Accident

Abstract
This study aimed to prepare fundamental data for developing a CVA patient-oriented rehabilitation program by identifying the patients' cognitive status, activities daily living performance (ADLP) and occupational performance / satisfaction. The subjects of this study consist of 20 CVA patients living in Y rural community Kyonggi-do Korea who could communicate each other, anol never been involved in rehabilitation therapy since CVA. The study has been carried out from February to August 2001.
The collected data were analyzed with SAS program in which differences of cognitive status, ADLP, and of occupational performance / satisfaction were identified by t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to identify correlations among the variables. The MMSE was employed as a measuring tool for cognitive status, FIM for measuring ADLP, and COPM for measuring occupational performance / satisfaction.
The findings were as follows;
1. The highest cognitive status score was shown in the clause of orientation with 7.45 out of 10, however, the lowest score in the clause of expression and judgement with 1.33.
2. The clause of comprehension in ADLP showed the highest score of 6.25 out of 7, but moving to bathtub and step up-down showed the lowest score of 3.60 respectively.
3. Occupational performance scored 2.0 out of 10, and satisfaction with the performance scored 3.1.
4. In correlation among variables, the higher the cognitive status, the higher ADLP. And the higher the performance, the higher satisfaction with the performance.
From the above findings, it was identified that the cognitive status and ADLP, and occupational performance and satisfaction had some relationship, one another. Thus, for the rehabilitation intervention of CVA patients, tries that are focused on the development of cognitive status, and the functional therapy would contribute to the ADLP and satisfaction with the occupational performance. Moreover, The individualized rehabilitation program with COPM would be helpful for improving the patients' quality of life.
